ICKNIELD Community College has maintained its “good” rating from Ofsted following its most recent inspection.

The 638-pupil Watlington secondary school was described as providing “a good standard of education in a close and caring community,” and inspector Christine Raeside said there were good prospects of it improving further.

She said: “Students say that they feel extremely safe at school and most parents and carers agree the school keeps them safe. Relationships between staff and students are warm.

“The quality of care, guidance and support offered to students is a strength of the school.”

She said teaching was particularly strong in English and maths, but attainment among students was broadly average overall.

She said the school must now ensure students’ progress was consistently high by making sure more of the teaching was good or outstanding.

Mat Hunter, vice principal of Banbury School, will take over as the college’s headteacher in September, with current head Richard Hudson going to Rome to lead the St George’s British International School. Ms Raeside said Mr Hudson and the governors had worked hard to ensure a smooth handover.
