I CAN never take any great comfort when an individual loses their job but the closing down of the News of the World and the subsequent job losses, comes pretty close.

I suppose one could always say don’t moan if you get burned when you play with the devil. I do hope they find new jobs though.

The sickening behaviour of some journalists goes way beyond what is acceptable and one wonders if a complete overhaul of the great British press isn’t needed.

Consider this: the vast majority of top Fleet Street journalists come from a private education background. That would go a long way to explaining the continuous lambasting of working people, a loathing of public services they never use and a general vilification of working people (there are notable exceptions, of course.) Another issue must surely be Rupert Murdoch and his huge media corporation. How can it be morally correct for one rich and powerful press baron to own more than one title?

Even our beloved Prime Minister says the political and media families have taken a bashing, not to mention the police.

How on earth can ex-Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Andy Hayman take issue with anyone who thinks he had conflicting interests, as he became a News International employee practically as soon as he retired from investigating, yes, News International.

Now is the time for this Government to do something popular and make moves to break up Murdoch’s empire and his many fingers in many pies. After all, it would surely have public backing.

Of course, these politicians may have to forgo the odd dinner party at Rupert’s expense.
