TODDLERS at a Headington nursery watched 30 butterflies disappear into the sunshine as part of a project to teach youngsters about life cycles.

Forty-eight children aged two to four have been watching the Painted Lady butterflies grow from caterpillars at Cherry Tree Nursery in Gladstone Road.

Yesterday manager Jenny Willoughby released the butterflies into the garden of the nursery.

Mrs Willoughby, 46, manager of the nursery for the past three years, said: “We got the butterflies from a company called Insects Galore and this is the third year we have done this.

“The children have been doing butterfly paintings as well. It is a really good project.

“Some of the butterflies land in the garden and lie around for a few days before they eventually fly off.”
