The journey from town to country is just a few hundred yards for lucky West Oxford folk. In Binsey we have an “agricultural hamlet” — thus properly styled — as easily accessible on foot or bike for us as for smarter types from east of Port Meadow.

Marvel as we mingle freely this Sunday between noon and 5pm, sharing the fun of Binsey’s annual fete, this year styled Rus in Urbe. Some will arrive by car, the better to assist in the transport home of booty bagged at various stalls — including one selling plants. Fruit and vegetables from Medley Manor PYO will also be on sale. Parking proceeds go to good causes, among them the local church.

St Margaret’s and its ‘treacle well’ serve as inspiration for a Mad Hat Fancy Dress competition. There will be many children’s sports, including a tug-o’-war.

You can eat spit-roasted Gloucester Old Spot pig from FAI Farms in Wytham, and locally made jams, cakes and quiches can be had at the tea tent. The Perch will provide its delicious raspberry cordial.

Unique to the fete is the Admirable Chicken Contest, in which you may vote for your favourite in a tent full of chickens — from some as small as a clenched fist to the Buff Orpington, nearly as big as a sheep. All are locally bred, and displayed with silly mission statements to help you with your choice.
