Sir – I’m not surprised there have been complaints to Oxford City Council about the new brown wheelie bin service (Report, June 30). Under the old system, garden waste and refuse from the small kitchen caddies were collected in the same vehicle.
This method has continued into the new scheme and, therefore, cannot see how the new charge can be justified.
As far as I can see, the only added expense is the provision of new bins and disposable bags which is totally unnecessary when the green hessian sacks worked perfectly well in the past and are much easier to store when not in use.
More importantly, what about the CO2 generated by those who choose not to participate in this scheme and now have to take their garden waste by car to a recycling centre. Surely, this is not the way forward and penalises those who support the council’s requirements to recycle more.
