Sir – I was delighted to see council staff in Queen Street at 7pm recently picking up litter and making the street ready for the next day’s users.

Oxford looks so much better when it is clean and tidy.

Thousands of Oxford citizens work in partnership with the city council to help keep it so. OxClean, an initiative of The Oxford Civic Society, with the active support of the city council and The Oxford Times, organises the annual Spring Clean.

We promote schools’ anti-litter awards and campaign on issues such as the litter on the ring road verges — where we want the surrounding districts to pick up more and motorists to drop less litter.

We want to work with traders to reduce the impact of their packaging on our environment. See www.oxclean.org.uk for more of what we do.

We are very grateful for the efforts of the many who share our desire to see Oxford clean and tidy all year round. With many of them we are in regular contact.

I am sure there are others who would like to do something, but don’t know exactly what, or perhaps how to go about it. We would like to hear from them. We need help to work with traders, community groups, bus companies, the councils etc to ensure that our beautiful city is a welcoming and pleasant place for people to live, work and visit.

In addition, all of this activity needs co-ordination and we need a new co-ordinator.

I would like to appeal to anyone who can help us, to email info@oxclean.org.uk or ring 07505 756 692.

Vernon Porter, Honorary Secretary, Oxford Civic Society
