I FIND it incredible that with all the financial problems we are facing, and all the council, government and military cuts taking place, someone has come up with the idea of wasting thousands of pounds renaming and tidying up the back gate at RAF Brize Norton for the repatriation route.

The scheme follows public criticism of fallen servicemen being returned via the back gate.

What the decision makers fail to understand, though, is that, whatever you call it, the back gate is still the back gate, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of this country deserve at least to leave by the same gate by which they arrived when they went out to fight.

A few weeks ago there was a handing over of keys, when the transport planes from Wiltshire arrived. But how many of the big wigs attending left by the back gate?

In short, none. They should stop wasting money and remember that what’s good for them should be good for our fallen heroes.

They deserve it more than the big wigs.
