Schoolchildren and their parents dashed through the streets of Jericho yesterday.

About 100 youngsters took part in a one-kilometre run and 260 adults took part in a 10k event to raise money for St Barnabas Primary School.

It raised £3,000 – through entrance fees – for the Hart Street school. The money will be spent on books and sports equipment.

The event, known as Run Jericho, was organised by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association.

PTA chairman Quinn Bailey said: “It was a really lovely community event.

“Lots of people came into the streets and cheered the runners on.

“The children and adults who came in last got just as big a cheer as the people who came in first. It was magical.”

She said: “It does raise money for the school, but for us it is much more important in getting the children inspired about sport.

“It is really important not just for them to run but also to see their parents run.”

Ms Bailey’s children, Emmie, six, and Elle, five, took part.

It was the first time the run has been held but it will be an annual event.
