Having read the statistics (Oxford Mail, July 6) for absence through sickness of local council employees (on average, more than seven days per year) I realise how fortunate I have been to miss only 12 days (five of them through a self-inflicted sports injury) in more than 40 years of employment.

I can only assume that the local councils have been unfortunate in their selection of staff, and that it is not a statistic that applies to the health of the nation as a whole.
