CHILDREN desperate for a walk-in sandpit at Beckley Primary School are busy collecting tokens to help raise the funds.

If the village primary school wins the £7,500 of building work, it wants to create the dream play area for its youngest pupils.

Headteacher Claire Bishop said: “We have been trying our best to collect tokens.

“The children are collecting them and bringing them in, and parents are getting behind us.

“The village shop in Stanton St John has been collecting them for us as well.”

The school already has an outdoor area used for lessons but wants to develop it further.

When teachers asked children what they should build there, they said they wanted a large sandpit, covered by an awning, big enough to take whole classes for lessons.

Children’s own designs of what they want at the school includes slides, steps, and tree trunks used as seating. Others want a boat, a pond and boulders.
