On Your Bike in Oxfordshire by Ellen Lee & John Broughton

(Countryside Books, £8.99)

This has some great suggestions for rides — from very short ones for beginners to longer days out. The longest is 29 miles, which is short for ‘serious cyclists’ but ideal for anyone who wants to look round places, or have tea, rather than take on an athletic challenge. This is part of a series, but Lee and Broughton obviously know the area well.

The background information is useful and well-written, and the instructions show great attention to detail. One word of warning: in my copy, the ride from Thame ends abruptly in mid-sentence. This may have been a blip with a review copy, but check carefully before parting with your money. The index suggests there should be 96 pages. Other than that, it’s well produced, with spiral binding and tough paper.
