Three people were arrested after rival groups fought in Banbury.

Police said between 1.55pm and 3pm yesterday, a large group of white men and women and a group of black women, aged from 17 to mid-forties, got into an altercation in Bridge Street, outside McDonald's.

A police spokesman said: "The altercation continued to the train station and in to Middleton Road, by the Londis Shop.

"The group continued to exchange abuse with each other, with a fight breaking out, until police were called and arrived on scene.

"No-one was seriously injured in the incident although one woman received minor facial injuries."

PC Beth Cocker, from Banbury Police Station, said: “This altercation took place in the middle of the day in Banbury and I am keen to speak to anyone who noticed these two groups shouting and swearing at each other.

“At the moment, we are treating it as an affray and it is not believed to be racially motivated, however we are keen to speak to independent witnesses who were not part of either group to get to the bottom of what happened.”

Police said two people were arrested at the scene, a 20-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Public Order Act. They have both been released on bail until July 23 A further man, aged 29, has since been arrested and also released on bail.
