NEW recycling bins are popping up this month as part of Oxfordshire’s bid to become the greenest county in the UK.

The bins in city and town centres have been a fixture in Cherwell and Oxford for over a year, but will now appear in South Oxfordshire and the Vale.

They aim to make recycling outside the home even easier.

Spokesman for the Oxfordshire Waste Partnership, Paul Mocroft, said: “This is all about giving people no excuses to not recycle their rubbish.

“People have become really good at recycling their waste at home, so it’s great to be offering another service for people.”

The bins have three compartments – two for recycling and one for litter – to provide a place to recycle cans, paper, plastic and glass.

They have appeared in Faringdon and Henley over the past fortnight and will be arriving in Didcot, Thame and Wallingford in the next few weeks.

They will be introduced in Abingdon and Wantage over the summer.

Mr Mocroft said: “Oxfordshire has already been voted one of the greenest counties in the country. Hopefully with all these introductions and things in place, we could be top next year.”

In February, it was announced that people in Oxfordshire throw away less rubbish into landfill than anywhere else in the UK.

The new bins coincides with National Recycle Week, which takes place this week.
