Reading Peter Unsworth’s story of lost Felicity, he says no one seemed to care or take notice of the crying toddler.
Sadly, this is because of our present day society. I have rescued lost toddlers before (including one lost in a loo) because I am a lover of children, albeit an ex-childminder/ foster mum. But, at the time, I did wonder if I was doing the right thing, with so many paedophiles about.
Having had experience of this myself, I can sympathise with the adult who dare not approach for fear of being labelled as such.
Don’t blame the adults, though. Many decent ones could barely ignore a stricken child. Instead blame the world we live in today.
Regarding his tale of manners, I politely moved out of the way for one lady on a mobility scooter in a shop, and apologised if I was in her way.
An indignant glare and thrust forward on the scooter was the response – one for which my foster child would have been verbally reprimanded; and he was three-and-a-half.
At two he knew ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Many adults are so rude themselves, it’s no wonder children are.
Again, it is a sad reflection on society.
