MOTORISTS speeding near a controversial new roundabout have been targeted by police dishing out hundreds of pounds in fines.

Thames Valley Police began conducting speed checks on the A41 in Bicester after receiving reports of speeding motorists and two serious collisions.

Earlier this month Oxford Mail readers called for clearer signs after three men were badly injured when their car flipped over at the new roundabout.

Ambulance staff contacted the Mail warning drivers to be more aware after paramedics were called out to seven collisions at the roundabout in the nine weeks since it opened.

They said drivers may be confused because the roundabout was to the side of a previously straight road.

The speed limit along the A41 has been temporarily reduced to 40 mph.

On Monday last week, officers dealt with 30 drivers who were exceeding the 40mph speed limit, in just two hours.

On Friday, a further 45 drivers were caught speeding in an hour and 45 minutes. One was travelling at 84mph – more than double the limit.

Those caught by police were issued with a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence.

A police spokesman said officers would be conducting further checks to reinforce the 40mph speed limit.
