It would be hard to accuse people in Oxfordshire of turning their back on the work of the county’s armed forces. Two major events this week have reflected the wishes of residents to take practical steps to support soldiers and other members of the armed forces.

Like many local authorities, Oxfordshire County Council is being forced to make cuts, but has managed to find more than £100,000 over the next 12 months to help service leavers re-settle in the county.

Some might argue that this should be the responsibility of the Ministry of Defence, but many of those living at military bases across the county have family members who also rely on the council’s support. The funding is not a huge amount but, combined with council tax relief for 8,200 personnel, it could make a real difference for many families.

The campaign of Oxfordshire teacher Alix Hodge, to raise £1m for troops injured in Afghanistan, and their families, will continue the good work that the Help for Heroes charity started. These soldiers live and work in our towns, are prepared to die for their country, and deserve our support.
