Sir – I think I owe Hugh Jaeger an apology. I had assumed from his previous correspondence (and I suspect I’m not alone in making this assumption) that he was something of a pro-car, anti-cycling zealot in the Clarkson mould.
I’m therefore delighted to discover from his latest letter (June 16) that he is in fact both a keen cyclist and an ardent user of public transport. I have to say though, this revelation really only serves to make his position on this issue even more confusing to me!
Why would a cycling fan be in favour of parliament spending time (paid for out of Mr Jaeger’s taxes) debating Andrea Leadsom’s petty, vindictive bill, which might, at the very most, save one or two lives a year, when, as I mentioned before, there are far more straightforward and cost-effective ways of improving overall safety on our roads?
