Today we get an answer to a big question: will justice come if you are a victim of crime?

The Oxford Mail has obtained figures through a Freedom of Information request about the number of crimes committed in the last year in Oxfordshire.

We have tallied the numbers with the detection rates, so you can see what is happening in your neighbourhood.

Generally, across Oxford, there is a one-in-four chance that the person responsible will get collared.

But, if you are unlucky enough to fall foul of serious crime, the police seem to pull out all the stops.

In the city, there were 108 serious violent crimes in the last year and, commendably, more than 65 per cent were solved.

There is reaction in today’s story from people who praise city police for their efforts in bringing hardcore criminals to justice, and rightly so.

That is heartening to know.

There must, indeed, be a sense of priorities.

However, it is therefore unsurprising to see other detection rates lag behind.

We feature burglaries and the fact that less than one-in-eight are solved.

The impact of these crimes is far greater than a bill for replacing a crowbarred door lock.

It is the emotional fall out, as a victims of crime charity has said.

But the impossible question is: would we be happy for police to let go of their grip on capturing serious criminals, in a bid to reduce burglaries?

It is not realistic to expect police to eradicate all crime.

So, what should their priorities be? Let us know.
