MEMBERSHIP of Barton Leisure Centre has more than trebled following a makeover.

The number of members rose from 130 to 500 since a redevelopment six months ago to add a new gym, refurbish changing rooms and add a new reception.

Overall attendance has also risen 40 per cent at the four-year-old Waynflete Road facility, owned by Oxford City Council.

Councillor Van Coulter, council board member for leisure services, said: “I am delighted to see this huge increase in membership as well as people visiting the centre.

“Local people had been asking for a gym after we had built the swimming pool and I am delighted that we were able to provide that.

“This increase shows that we have provided a facility that was much needed within the community.”

Centre manager David Hunt said: “The addition of the new gym, together with the other improvements has resulted in a huge increase in footfall and memberships. It’s great to see the centre being a hub for the local community.

“We have seen residents from Barton, Headington, Risinghurst and many other areas of Oxford coming to use the great facilities, the centre is easily accessible and there is free parking.”

He said new fitness classes have been put on to meet demand.
