A PUB in Old Marston is assuring customers it won’t be calling last orders any time soon, after a £75,000 refurbishment from Greene King.

The interior at The Red Lion pub in Oxford Road has been closed to punters for three weeks but will be unveiled to the public on Saturday.

In March, regulars at the watering hole raised £20,000 to help temporary landlady Diana and her husband Stewart Berry, pictured, stay on at the pub permanently.

They say they are determined to make it a success and have worked with owner Greene King to secure the £75,000 for the makeover.

Marston watering holes to have closed in the last decade include The Cavalier, the Friar, The Three Horseshoes and The Bricklayers Arms.

Mrs Berry, 54, said: “They obviously think this is a pub worth saving, especially with the Bricklayers’ Arms going and problems with other Pubs.

“There’s just no community spirit any more, you don’t know who your neighbours are. Pubs help by bringing people together, so we work hard at that.”

The pub has been given new furniture, windows and the bar has been extended.

The refurbishment will be unveiled in a Tuxedo and Tiara party on Saturday at 7pm and everyone is welcome.
