THE wraps have come off the fastest production Mini ever made.

The Cowley-built Coupe is a two-seater sports car which promises to blend performance with the practicality of a large boot.

Bosses at the Mini plant revealed details of the car in advance of a “pre-drive” event for motoring journalists in Vienna this week.

It will be officially launched at the beginning of October, but dealers are already taking orders. Prices have not yet been released, but about £20,000 has been reported.

Mini spokesman Sarah Heaney said: “This is very much a niche model at the top of the range.”

The car has two spoilers, one which automatically extends at speeds over 50mph to boost its aerodynamics.

But it also boasts a high-opening tailgate and large luggage area. Power comes from the latest engines, with a top speed of almost 150mph in the Cooper version.

The Coupe is the first of two new Cowley-built models to be launched within a six-month period.

The Roadster, a two-seater convertible, will follow early next year.
