TWO CHOIRS last night celebrated ten years of firm friendship with a concert at Oxford’s historic Sheldonian Theatre.

This week the East Oxford Community Choir welcomed back old friends, the Ensemble Vocal Interlude, from Oxford’s twin city Grenoble in south east France.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the twinning between the two choirs, who meet every year in their home cities.

They celebrated with a performance of St Paul by Mendelssohn at the Sheldonian in Broad Street.

Mel Houldershaw, director and conductor of the East Oxford Community Choir, said it was the first time either choir had sung at the theatre. She added: “We wanted to do something to celebrate the last ten wonderful years of friendship, twinning and singing.

“Over the last decade the two choirs have become very firm friends.

“You couldn’t wish for a nicer group of people.“ Oxford is also twinned with Bonn, in Germany, Perm, in Russia, Leiden, in the Netherlands and Leon, in Nicaragua.

The two choirs are pictured taking part in an impromptu rehearsal, led by Ms Houldershaw, as the Grenoble choir arrived in Oxford on Thursday.
