FARMS across Oxfordshire will open their gates to the public on Sunday to give urban folk a glimpse of country life.

Farms across the county will invite people to drop in and find out how live produce makes its way to their dinner tables, as part of nationwide Open Farm Sunday.

One of the farms taking part is Foxbury Farm in Burford Road, Brize Norton, run by the Dawes family.

Rebecca Dawes, 23, whose father Colin, 49, runs the farm, said: “We have been farming all our lives and about 10 years ago we started running a farm shop and butchers.

“We had about 2,500 visitors last year and Open Farm Sunday is a good opportunity for people to see the animals and the sausages being made in our shop.”

There will also be a ‘fly-over’ by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Gloucestershire Air Ambulance, whose members will explain their work within the farming community. The day will raise cash for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution and St Britius Church of Brize Norton.

The farm is a member of LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), organisers of Open Farm Sunday.

It is a registered charity helping farmers and producers manage their farms as efficiently as possible, to produce good food while caring for the environment.

Spokesman David Gough said: “About 15 farms from Oxfordshire will be taking part in this national event, which attracted 400 farms last year.

“The event, now in its sixth year, is supported by the National Farmers’ Union and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and it has been growing every year.”
