AN Abingdon man is stepping out to raise cash for a cancer charity in memory of his big sister.

Darius Evans, 32, will walk 10 miles alongside his family and friends to honour Elicia Bolam, who passed away in March.

The 44-year-old council worker suffered breast and brain cancer and died at Sobell House Hospice at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford.

Mr Evans, of Saxton Road, now hopes to raise more than £600 for the hospice after the walk along the Thames on July 17.

He said: “She was in there for about five weeks and my brothers spent every hour of the day with her.

“The care that she received was so amazing. There was so much they did for her. Anything she needed to make her more comfortable – they were so helpful.

“I felt like my sister would want me to do something to say thank you.”

He added: “It is more of a cheerful thing to celebrate her life.”

The group, which currently stands at 13, will leave from Abbey Meadows in Abingdon at about 10am and walk to the Kings Arms in Sandford-on-Thames and back.

Mrs Bolam, a housing officer at South Oxfordshire District Council, lived in Metcalfe Close, Abingdon, with her husband Simon and child.

Hospice spokesman Kath Morris said: “I am delighted that Darius is holding this walk in memory of his sister. I really hope he gets lots of support for this. It is a lovely walk for a lovely person.”

Entry for the walk is £10 and anyone wanting to take part should email eliciariverwalk@aol.co.uk
