Oxford United captain James Constable and a team of volunteers set off to Kenya on Monday on a 10-day trip to teach children English and sport.

Constable, last year’s leading goal scorer, will be joined by the club’s social inclusion officer John Armstrong and eight fans on a project to teach English and PE to schoolchildren in Nukuru.

Each must raise £2,300 to cover costs for the trip and a donation towards Kenyan charities and Oxford United Youth and Community Sports Trust.

The trip will help pay for more than 100,000 school meals, PE equipment and books for Kenyan schoolchildren.

The striker said: “I’ve been really looking forward to this trip and it should be an amazing experience for all of us involved. It is a privilege to be able to help those less fortunate than ourselves and it should be a real eye-opener.”

When he returns, he will jet off to the USA for a nine-day pre season tour with the U’s.
