TODAY’S story about how 15 homes in Rose Hill have been paying too much council tax makes a strong case for checking if you’ve been wrongly billed.

Residents in Mortimer Road, Rose Hill, were stunned to discover 18 homes were on a cheaper band than 22 neighbouring properties – even though they were identical.

Unsurprisingly, the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) has moved most to the cheaper band, a victory for people power if ever there was one.

It has also urged homeowners to get in touch if they think they are in the wrong band.

Our advice? Go for it. A natter over the fence with your neighbour might provide some surprising results and much-needed cash in your pocket.

The story also raises questions about how the VOA banded properties in 1991. While rumours officers made judgements out of a passing car window have been discredited, such a huge disparity is enough to worry any homeowner.
