A £130,000 overhaul of a Blackbird Leys play area could see the return of the estate’s skatepark.

Oxford City Council will revamp the Pegasus Road playground later this year.

Designs for the children’s play area are in the early stages but residents will be asked if they want a skatepark on the site as part of a public consultation later this month.

Imagine Co-operative Childcare, part of the Mid-Counties Co-op, built a £1m nursery on the site of the previous skatepark in Cuddesdon Way in 2009.

Children say they have been forced to travel to Abingdon and Thame to skate since their park was bulldozed.

Blackbird Leys city councillor Val Smith said: “This is a well used playground as it attracts younger children and is a nice safe area. It will be upgraded with new play equipment.”

She said any new facility would be targeted at young children.

“What we should be clear about is that the skatepark was for younger children, not professional skateboarders, but for six, seven and eight-year olds.

“It was safe for them because it wasn’tfull of huge great structures. I hope people will be in favour (of a skatepark). You have to be careful with skateboarding because of the noise but this is an ideal position.”

The news of the play investment follows last week’s planning permission for a new council-built £16m swimming pool on the estate.

Residents should find out later this month if that project, planned next to the sports centre in Pegasus Road, is definitely going ahead.

Last year, the council spent £90,000 on improving the play area in Cuddesdon Way, where new equipment included a large scramble net, swings, toddler swings and a rope roundabout.

The latest playground revamp is part of the council’s £2.5m programme to upgrade aging play areas across the city.

It is now in its third and final year of the scheme. A public consultation session is planned at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, Pegasus Road, on Wednesday, June 15, between 5pm and 7.30pm.
