PIRATES, police officers and children in prams were among the scarecrows created by Blackbird Leys residents for a special competition.

The estate’s Holy Family Church in Cuddesdon Way is trying to raise money for a new church roof and held a scarecrow contest to help raise funds.

Estate residents this week made their own scarecrows to go around the Leys before a parade to the church on June 26 when the winning scarecrow will be crowned.

Some 18 scarecrows were made on Tuesday at an event organised by Catalyst Housing, A2 Dominion Housing and Oxford Citizen’s Housing Association.

More than 40 are vying for the title, to be judged by Oxford East MP Andrew Smith, Blackbird Leys Allotments Association’s Reg Curnock and straw supplier Phil Sellar.

Ines Kretzschmar, of Catalyst, said: “It’s fantastic how many families came out. Even the community police officers came and made a scarecrow officer.”

Russell Price, of the Holy Family Church, said: “I think it has been incredibly encouraging, showing how creative people on the estates are.”

A £1 map of all scarecrows will go on sale in estate shops and schools from June 19. A poll for the best scarecrow will be on the back.Visit holyfamily bbl.co.uk, or call 01865 714163.
