OLD Marston residents are attempting to restart the village’s summer festival after a gap of two decades.

As county residents prepare for a summer of fetes and festivals, volunteers are being sought to kickstart the event next year.

Duncan Hatfield, vice-chairman of the Old Marston Parish Council, said: “I think the last thing that happened in Marston, which brought the whole community together, was some fundraising for Mortimer Hall back in 1986.

“I don’t think there’s been anything like that on a big scale since then.”

He said: “The idea started at out last open day for Mortimer Hall Recreational Ground, when one of the parents suggested having an event that included adults.

“So I spoke to lots of people and the idea for a fete started to come forward.

“There is a fantastic sense of community down here but unless someone takes the initiative, nothing will be done.”

The last event was called the Marston June Fair.

Mr Hatfield hopes a meeting will be held over the next few months to form some ideas.

He said: “I think years ago, there used to be a lot going on in the community but interest in that seems to have dwindled with younger generations.

“I think that’s a reflection on society, with groups tending to do their own thing more. If people all came together on one day and did one big thing, we could hopefully raise lots of money for the community too.”

The event would fundraise for groups including the Marston Saints Football Club, which is hoping to raise thousands for a new pavilion.

Vice-chairman Eddy Aldworth said: “We think it’s a great idea, Marston is a big village and this could absolutely work.”

Diana Berry, landlady at the Red Lion pub in Oxford Road, said: “We are absolutely behind this idea and have already offered use of our car park and green for them to use.

“Community spirit is unfortunately a bit lacking.

“But it’s definitely something people want.”
