Sir – For many years pedestrians have had to step on to the road in several places in the centre of Oxford, risking injury from vehicles, because bicycles are parked on the pavement.

Chris Emlyn-Jones and David Dixon in separate letters (May 19) now say that they should not do this, not out of regard for pedestrians, but because it can be dangerous for cyclists on the road who may come off the worse if they collide with a pedestrian.

Have they any suggestion which shows consideration for pedestrians and deals with this situation?

Cyclists could appropriately be reminded of your recent report (May 12) on the trials of a man with a wheelchair experiencing hazards in the city, some of which involved parked bicycles..

I have recently been looking at back copies of your newspaper on another matter and could not help but notice that in the 1940s cyclists could be fined for creating an obstruction by leaving a bicycle on the pavement.

Presumably there was a local by-law covering this. I wonder if it is still in force..
