Despite the gnarly rain that ended the Bank Holiday weekend, the O2 Academy’s top room still drew a sold-out crowd for a punk pop double-header, which featured two of the genre’s fastest rising young US acts.

First up were New York quintet We Are The In Crowd, who seem to be gathering a shedload of momentum, despite the fact that their debut album is still months away from release.

Playing a short half-hour set, they cram in as much energy and willing into their performance as some acts pack into two-hour shows, with their buzzsaw guitar riffs and soaring vocal bridges. As well as their own stormers Never Be What You Want and Both Sides Of The Story, they even manage to turn Taylor Swift’s slushy Love Story into a full-on punk rocker, with their beefed up cover causing a whirlwind of circle pits, which must be the first time any such event has taken place to a Taylor Swift track. Expect to hear their name a lot more in the coming weeks and months.

Florida’s Mayday Parade have a tough job following, but their muscular brand of catchy punk ultimately proves triumphant. Their 45 minutes is all driving Taking Back Sunday riffs meeting The Used’s earnest vocal delivery, especially on stand-out tracks Anywhere But Here and Three Cheers For Five Years.

It’s good solid pop punk and the band have the O2’s exuberant masses just where they want them pretty early on, with their lyrics of broken hearts and odes to friendship sung over a battering ram of hummable guitar lines.
