Sir – I very much fear that Mr van Dam (Letters, May 26) is wrong. Mr Gray is a fictional character. Witness the fact that there is not a single reference to Mr Gray in the same edition.

It is a sad passing. I much enjoyed the character’s satirical praise of the goujons of plaice and overdone T-bones in the countryside pubs it visited.

And the acme was perhaps when it made a rare visit to one of our splendid ethnic restaurants, and the Rosemarie character found the food ‘a bit spicy’. Terrific stuff.

I think that The Oxford Times will find itself in the position of Conan Doyle when he killed off Sherlock Holmes.

The ‘Christopher Gray’ character will have to be brought back as a result of popular acclaim.
