Sir – On a recent trip to Ghana I was pleasantly surprised to find that, wherever I went in the country, I always had full mobile signal and a strong EDGE (the level below 3G) data signal.

Compare this to Oxford where in large parts of the city, including most of the city centre, I get a very poor signal and hardly any data signal. For a city that claims to be a world centre for technology and innovation this is unacceptable and, quite frankly, embarrassing.

It may seem like a trivial problem, but the future of computing is mobile and Oxford can’t afford to look like a Luddite city if it wants to attract investment in this area.

There is a clear need to build more mobile phone masts in Oxford and to speed up the planning process to enable this to happen.
