OXFORD City Council has spent more than £350,000 on its credit cards over the last three years, a Freedom of Information Act request has revealed.

In total, the council has admitted spending £351,248.69 on credit cards over the past three years.

But the total only includes bills over £500, meaning the total sum could be far higher.

According to documents published by The Daily Telegraph, the council is rated 23rd out of 186 councils for the amount spent on its cards.

Payments put on plastic include £171,399 towards maintenance, £171,399 on training, £49,341 on publicity, £41,844 on legal fees, £11,132 on IT equipment, £6,852 on hotels, £4,330 on travel expenses, £1,315 on furniture and £627 on hospitality.

Expenses covered included refitting council houses, emergency housing for homeless people and job adverts.

In comparison, Cherwell District Council put £85,990.01 on its credit cards over the same period, and Vale of White Horse made credit card payments totalling £6,517.41.

Oxfordshire County Council, South Oxfordshire and West Oxfordshire district councils have not yet provided data on the use of their credit cards.
