THE collapse of this year’s Cowley Road Carnival was a massive disappointment for the city.

In recent weeks we have seen a number of large-scale community events fall.

The reasons have differed, although a lack of cash seems to be a major factor.

The Oxford Folk Festival fell foul to the economic climate.

Meanwhile, we have lost Barton Bash to hefty council red tape and paperwork.

Today’s page four story is an important statement of intent.

We must support carnival in the park in July.

Anyone who has been to the event in Cowley Road will know what a success it can be.

The crowds are unrivalled at any other public gathering across the county.

It genuinely gels the community, bringing schools, neighbours and businesses together.

There is no doubt that not having carnival in the street completely alters the face of the event.

But it will still be a great day.

At least it can be, if the people of Oxford show their support.

All the organisers are asking is people come along and enjoy carnival.

Hopefully, that is something we can all do.
