PLANS to transform Wantage Market Place could be scrapped as Tory council leaders looks to undo a long heralded vision for the town.
The Lib Dems put aside £300,000 to make the square more pedestrian-friendly.
But the Tories, who took control of Wantage Town Council in the May 5 elections and have pledged to review the scheme.
The Market Place redevelopment, which was expected to cost between £500,000 and £1m, could have created a two-way traffic system on the south side and pedestrianisation of the north side.
Bus stops and car parking would be taken out.
But new Conservative town and district councillor, Fiona Roper, said many shopkeepers and residents disagreed with the plans.
Linda Hatter, vice-chairman of Wantage Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the review.
She said Market Place traders were concerned the scheme would drive business away if people could not park in the area.
The matter is set to be discussed at a town council policy, management, and finance committee on Monday, June 13.
The meeting, at Wantage Civic Hall at 7.30pm, is open to the public.
