PRESIDENT Obama got a flame-grilled taste of Oxfordshire on his state visit to Britain, without even setting a foot in the county.

When the Camerons and Obamas fired up the barbecue on the lawns of Downing Street, it was ribs from a Chadlington butcher’s shop that were dished up.

Family-owned Slatters Butchers, which supplied the pork in a Chinese glaze, is a stone’s throw from David Cameron’s constituency home in Dean.

The firm has been keeping the Prime Minister stocked with prime ribs for years.

But butcher John Brain said it had been “very satisfying” to see a president polish off some of Slatters’ produce.

The PM’s office placed the rib order last week before sending a car to pick it up on Monday.

Mr Brain said: “They ordered pork ribs in a chinese sauce. They are very popular for barbecues.

“David Cameron does come in when he is in Dean. He has been coming here for a few years now.”

The shop, in West End, Chadlington, has been home to a butchers since 1874 and has been Slatter’s since the 1970s.

But what makes their ribs stand out head and shoulders above the rest?

“It is all locally sourced pork and we put the glaze on to bring out the flavour,” said Mr Brain.

“And we hang the meat here so it tastes better.”

Tuesday’s barbecue, in the Downing Street back garden, was thrown in honour of decorated British and American servicemen.

In addition to ribs from Chadlington, the Prime Minister also stocked up on muffins from the Witney-based Fabulous Bakin’ Boys to entertain the troops.

Mr Cameron said: “It was a very good way of thanking our brave service personnel.

“We have such great local food suppliers here in Oxfordshire who provide superb quality produce and I was extremely pleased that I was able to showcase this talent at such a worthwhile and enjoyable event.”

And as soon as she had served up the coleslaw, Michelle Obama headed off to see Oxford for herself. She spent the afternoon at Christ Church with a group of pupils from a north London school before being whisked back to London to host a dinner at the US ambassador’s Regent’s Park residence.

It is not the first time Mr Cameron has championed Oxfordshire produce with the US president. When the pair met in Toronto last year, Mr Cameron present Mr Obama with a bottle of Hobgoblin beer from the Witney-based Wychwood brewery.
