Call in for a cup of tea at The Old Chapel, Fordwells, near Charlbury, and you may be served from an original china service, created when the chapel was built in the 1860s.

The cup and saucer bears the Fordwells Chapel inscription and is one of several artefacts that have survived, along with a notice of services and the original indenture.

The buyer of the former Methodist chapel will inherit the commemorative china and other historic pieces with the building.

Owner Juliet Dunmur, who lives there with husband David, said: “It was common for chapels to have tea services made for them when they opened.

“As you can imagine, not many of them survived and it is particularly rare for a former chapel still to have its own cup and saucer.”

The property includes a study, drawing room, family/dining area and three double bedrooms.

There was no garden until after the chapel was converted into a house and some land was acquired from a neighbour.

Mrs Dunmur said: “Most chapels of this type had no land with them at all, so we are very lucky to have this garden. The drawing room was the original chapel and we have a family/dining room that always feels sunny, with large windows on two sides and doors to the garden.”

The front of the house has a gravel driveway and the Old Chapel still has many original features, including a dated stone plaque on the front of the building. Mrs Dunmur added: “You can see the original front door, which is now a window and how our front door and porch was crafted from one of the two huge windows on the side.”

The drawing room includes a wood-burning stove and a pair of Gothic glazed doors.

Mrs Dunmur, who is a member of the Mental Health Tribunal, travels frequently to London.

She said: “Fordwells village is incredibly convenient for Charlbury station, which is just a few minutes’ drive through beautiful countryside.

“There is no rush hour and you’re on the train and into Paddington in just over an hour”.

The Old Chapel is on the market for £490,000.
