James Westerhouse has reacted to dismiss my letter in support of BBC Oxford’s regional TV news and against its closure (Oxford Mail, May 19).

He writes that I should be supporting the Oxford Mail instead. But let me say that I support the diversity of all news gathering and output by newspapers, radio and television. I stand by my view that Oxford’s BBC TV news service has been an overwhelming success – just like the Oxford Mail, which I have read since a boy. However, it remains the case that it is the local BBC TV news which is under threat of closure, not the Oxford Mail – and it is that news service which now needs and deserves our support.

I say again to all who support local journalism, to make sure that the BBC trustees hear your voice. We must tell them, in any way we can, to make sure that the BBC’s closure proposals are thrown out before the service is stopped, and we discover too late what Oxford and Oxfordshire viewers have lost.
