DRIVERS have so far escaped serious delays despite major roadworks in Iffley Road.

Motorists have braced themselves of jams until the resurfacing finishes late next year. But during the morning rush-hour on Monday, traffic was running freely and drivers said there had not been any major delays so far.

Some motorists said the road was less busy than usual after some commuters found alternative routes.

Jeff Measor, owner of ABC Radio Cars in Magdalen Road, said: “I left home early on Monday morning because I thought I would be held up by the roadworks but it was quieter than usual. I think a lot of drivers were avoiding Iffley Road.

“There haven’t been any major hold-ups all week.”

Phil Ashworth, of Oxford Bus Company, said: “We are liaising closely with the council and the contractors to keep delays to a minimum but there have been no problems so far.”

Rodney Rose, county council cabinet member for transport, said: “Things do appear to have gone relatively smoothly but there is obviously a very long way to go and we will be constantly monitoring the situation. Inevitably a project of this nature will cause some disruption.

“We look forward to providing a much improved surface for motorists as well as making the road more attractive for pedestrians and cyclists to use.”
