Sir – With reference to Liam Sloan’s article (May 12) about Oxford City Council’s deputy leader Ed Turner trying to negotiate the crowded pavements and roads of Oxford City centre in a wheelchair, I would like to suggest one practical measure that would assist wheelchair users by opening up a wide, flat, uncongested and traffic-free route between West Oxford and the city centre and Magdalen Bridge.
This could be achieved by Christ Church making the gates at the entrances to Christ Church Meadow, off Merton Street and Rose Lane, fully accessible.
At present, only the St Aldates gate is wide enough to allow entry by a person using a wheelchair, meaning that they have to take a circular route and leave by the same entrance. Making these two gates accessible would also help parents with children in pushchairs.
