Sir – Today marks the launch of an important initiative: a national free end of life information line.
It is the first of its kind to support people who are dying, their loved ones, carers and healthcare professionals by providing information on their existing end of life rights and how they can prepare for a good quality end of life, for example by making an advance decision or lasting power of attorney. Having see someone suffer a prolonged and painful end of life I myself have completed an advance decision that sets out my preferences for treatment.
My nearest relatives are pleased to know my wishes. The information line — 0800 999 2434 — was being launched at 11am today; information can also be found at www.compassionindying.org.uk
