YOUNGSTERS will explore the timeless mythologies of the Greek and Roman empires next week.

The 12 to 15-year-olds have devised the play, called Mythologies, which will appear at Pegasus Theatre, in Magdalen Road.

The piece retells the ancient texts with contemporary costumes and music, and asks why some stories endure for so long.

The teenagers have been working with professional director Jonathan Heron on the play since September.

Mr Heron said: “We were interested in the stories that survived over centuries.

“I think audiences will be reminded of the stories that endure, and maybe start to think about which stories we inherit and how stories are an important part of who we are.

“Why, for example, can we not get rid of stories like Icarus. What is it about those stories that survive generational and technical changes?”

One of the performers, Theo Howe, 13, of Wheatley, said: “It’s been really interesting, especially as we got to devise most of it ourselves.”

Mythologies will be performed between Wednesday, May 18, and Saturday, May 21, at 7pm every evening, with a matinee performance at 1.30pm on the Saturday.

Tickets cost £7 for adults, £5 for concessions and £4 for under 18s, and are available by contacting 01865 812150 or pegasustheatre.org.uk
