SEVENTY pensioners gathered at Wolvercote Young People’s Club for their annual party, amid fears county council cuts could make it their last.

Young people who use the club had raised £200 for food and entertainment through a sponsored community clean-up in Cutteslowe and a sleepover with all-night activities.

Over-60s from Upper Wolvercote, Lower Wolvercote, Wytham and Cutteslowe were picked up and brought to the party on Saturday, for entertainment from Long Hanborough’s Village Voices act bingo, raffles and a buffet.

Organiser David England said: “It was a fantastic party, and quite emotional that it could our last one. At the end, people were telling me they would never forget the day and the trip up to the club to meet everybody.

“Some had met up with school friends they had not seen for years.”

Oxfordshire County Council has voted to axe funding for the youth club, but the local community is trying to raise money to keep it open.

The party was this year named in memory Wolvercote stalwart Fred Drewett, who died last month aged 76.

The British Legion member was on the club’s management committee from 1966, teaching youngsters to play cricket and table tennis.
