An Artweeks visit to the Magdalen Road Studios is highly recommended. As at the studios 26 very different resident artists will be both exhibiting and demonstrating their work.

Work on show is of the highest standard and spans a huge range: from Marie Darkins’ shapely Raku pots to Feng Ho’s ethical fashion design, from Matthew Potter’s intricate geometric paintings to Dorothy Lawacango’s organic designs and drawings and the mixed media work that she evolves from them.

The artists also range in age and experience. At the more experienced end is photographer Paul Medley. Included are images from his Passed their Best series, where he captures dying cut flowers in a way that accentuates their fragile faded beauty. And images from his Objects of Significance series, where each subject was asked to pose with something of significance to them. As in Robert (pictured) with fellow photographer Robert Taylor, and his chosen object: a glass sculpture he was given in thanks for a portrait he had taken — nice circularity.

By contrast James Loriane-Smith will be opening his studio for the first time. Coming from a background based in graffiti art Loraine-Smith starts his pieces with doodles and sketches and from these develops a series of coherently integrated images, each of which has a humorous, sparky cartoon feel to them. And in common with the other artists at the studio, he feels strongly that his work benefits from the dialogue with other artists and their work that this lively place affords.

The studios are in East Oxford and open on May 21 and 22, 10am-6 pm.
