This is the ninth year that this group of West Oxford based artists have taken part in Artweeks. Each year the group invites one or more new artists to show with them: this year’s new artists are ceramicist Miranda Miller and children’s book illustrator Terry Milne.

Others taking part are Christine Freeborn, who works with glass to create both jewellery and sculptures; Andrew Walker, who is showing paintings, pots and ceramics; Joy Perkins, who is primarily a textile artist, but who also uses mixed media to create pieces which are often inspired by her love of water and wetlands; and photographer Helen White. White draws inspiration widely. we see her fascination with deconstructing texture and detail in close-up images, and with landscape portraiture. The landscapes she is showing this year include evocative images of the countryside in the South of France .

The exhibition also features the work of long-standing group member Louise Summers. She is primarily a printmaker who has increasingly enjoyed working in multi-media. She admits to a fascination with small, unusual, sometimes mysterious but usually welcoming cafes and buildings. Her multi-media piece Mick’s Cafe (above), brings these two together. By building up the piece using layers of paint and card Summers has created an engaging and lively image of this small cheerful and iconic diner that nestles alongside Oxford station.

In addition to showing their work, in the case of Deborah Williams, her collage, and of Lois Muddiman, her map-inspired installations, both will be running children’s workshops on the afternoon of Saturday, May 29. And on that afternoon the local streetcar will also be there and all are invited to come and paint it.

The exhibition is at the West Oxford Community Centre from May 21 to 30 and is open from noon till 6pm
