A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assaulting a 26-year-old woman in Oxford.

The woman was walking along Cowley Road shortly after 2am on Saturday when she was approached by a man who grabbed her and dragged her along the road.

He then attempted to pull her under a staircase at the back of a bar, at the end of Divinity Road.

A male passer-by heard the woman shouting and called police, before going to investigate.

The passer-by then challenged the attacker and after he ran away, waited with the woman until police arrived.

Det Con Simon Beaton, of Thames Valley Police, said: “This was a nasty incident that has left the woman very shaken.

“I would urge anyone who was out on Cowley Road in the early hours of Saturday morning, who may have seen or heard anything relating to this incident, to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible.”

The 16-year-old has been released on police bail until July 7.

Anyone with information should contact Det Con Beaton on 08458 505505 or the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111 on an anonymous basis.
