YOUNG dancers’ dreams came true when they stepped on to the stage at London’s famous Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

Members of Oxford’s Vera Legge School of Dancing performed at the Islington theatre in front of an audience of 1,500 people.

The dancers, aged from six to 21, performed a tap dance and a contemporary dance routine after three months of rehearsals.

The school, which uses the Regal Community Centre, in Ridgefield Road, East Oxford, performed alongside other dance schools from around the country last month.

Joanna Walton, who has been head of the school for six years, said: “It’s something you remember for the rest of your life – dancing somewhere like that – because very few people get the chance to perform there.

“And they did brilliantly. They did really well and all the parents were really pleased.

“It was a great show and it was nice to see other dance schools perform and mix with them.”

She added: “Sadler’s Wells is the home of dancing in the UK. It was a big event to go to London and perform in such a prestigious venue.

“It’s a good experience taking part in a professional show. You see how everything works behind the scenes.

“They really had a good time and they were all asking when they can go back.”

Stephanie Rockett, 15, from Florence Park, Oxford, has been dancing since she was three. She said: “It was the best experience I have ever had. I have always wanted to dance there.”

She added: “It was amazing to be on the stage. There were loads of people watching and cheering you on.”

Her mother, Tracy Rockett, 40, said: “It was brilliant. It was a great experience for the girls. They had a fantastic time.

“It was a long day but they thoroughly enjoyed it. To perform on a London stage was brilliant for them.”
