HUNDREDS OF collectable comics will be handed out at an East Oxford record store today.

The Truck Record store, in Cowley Road, formerly the independent film hire shop Videosyncratic, organised the mass giveaway to mark International Free Comic Book Day.

Hundreds of one-off editions of classic comics, including DC and Marvel brands, will be available to enthusiasts on a first-come first-served basis.

Michael Spira, who ran the Videosyncratic chain with his son Jon, now runs the Truck Comic concession. He said: “It is something we used to do in Videosyncratic and it was very popular.

“Most of the free comics are collectors’ items.

“They are special prints, with the date of Free Comic Book Day, and are one-offs.”

He added: “This sort of event brings the real collectors in as well as the people who are attracted by free comics. “ The 10th annual Free Comic Book Day is an international event in which more than 2.5 million comics will be given out.
