Rodney Rose, Cabinet Member for Highways and transport for Oxfordshire County Council, appears not to be carrying out his responsibilities, judging by news stories in this newspaper.

This is coupled with highway and footpath repairs which appear to me to be of a substandard nature.

His lack of getting involved at grass roots in getting repairs done quickly makes me question his performance in a job that carries much importance for the county.

In a reply to my letter ‘X marks the spot’ (Oxford Mail, April 7) Mr Rose stated that defective paving slabs in Witney would be repaired by April 20.

But I walked the area on April 21 and found that just a few of the dozens of defective paving slabs had been attempted to be repaired, by apparently pouring silver sand around joins to stop them wobbling.

This is totally inadequate and a waste of public money. Protruding slabs are far worse than wobbly ones and could eventually cause some poor soul to trip and sustain nasty injuries.

A letter from Alan Crowder in the Oxford Mail on April 25, declared the repairs from Woodstock to Yarnton to be not level, and, in the same issue, on page 14 Mr Rose was again condemned over a route for HGVs through Wolvercote, which, it is claimed, may cause untold damage to the ancient Goose Green bridge.

There were also reports of road surface repairs cracking in Wallingford Street in Wantage (Surface tension, Mail, March 23).

It is time Mr Rose returned to driving HGVs, then perhaps the county would benefit from sensible decisions.
